Através de evolución experimental, el laboratorio del Dr Cubillos tiene por objetivo mejorar genéticamente levaduras previamente aisladas en Chile para fermentación. Esto es posible a través de la identificación de los cambios moleculares en levaduras responsable de la adaptación fisiológica a mostos de fermentación y que confluyen con procesos de domesticación en hongos. Para esto, se utilizan diversas técnicas Omicas y aproximaciones genómicas y bioinformáticas.

Biography: 

Dr. Francisco A. Cubillos is an Engineer in Molecular Biotechnology from the Universidad de Chile, from where he graduated in 2006. Later, he completed a Master’s in Biological Sciences at the same Institution, from where he graduated in 2008. Dr. Cubillos completed his studies at the University of Nottingham where he obtained his Doctorate degree in 2010, being recognized as the best student of his generation.

 
Research Area: 

Dr. Cubillos currently leads the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile as an Independent Researcher since December 2015. Since then, he has received five projects as primary researcher and has published 13 manuscripts as corresponding author and 9 in collaboration with other colleagues in the field. So far, ten undergraduate students and two MRes students have graduated. His current research group includes seven undergraduate students, five Ph.D. students and four postdoctoral researchers. His research focuses on phylogenomic studies in ethanol-tolerant Patagonian yeasts, with fundamental scientific and biotechnological impacts. In addition, his group has specialized in the study of molecular changes in native yeasts derived from experimental evolution processes with the aim of obtaining genetically improved yeasts for the fermentation of beer, mead, among other fermented products (see figure). His group is committed to excellence in research in Chile and to supporting the development of new biotechnological applications for fermentative products.
