En Chile la producción de frutas como las uvas, cerezas, entre otras es afectada por diferentes patógenos, entre ellos el hongo Botrytis cinerea. Este hongo ha sido clasificado como el segundo hongo fitopatógeno más importante a nivel mundial, produciendo pérdidas de hasta un 30% en la producción de frutas. El control de este hongo se hace principalmente con fungicidas de origen sintético. La línea de investigación del laboratorio de Micología es la búsqueda y caracterización de extractos o compuestos puros naturales con actividad antifúngica contra B. cinerea. Los extractos o compuestos puros son obtenidos de hongos endófitos, aislados de plantas que crecen en el Cajón del Maipo. Algunos de los hongos aislados, identificados como, Aureobasidium sp, Epicoccum sp, Naganishia sp., entre otros inhiben el crecimiento micelial de B. cinerea por el mecanismo de antibiosis, a través de la producción de compuestos volátiles y no volátiles. Se identificó los compuestos volátiles producidos por Naganishia sp y se determinó que estos compuestos producen estrés oxidativo, daño en la pared celular y en la membrama plasmática de B. cinerea.
